The prequel series to Star Trek: The Original Series (1966), following the crew of the USS Enterprise. The screen graphics play an integral part in the visual storytelling of the series. I worked with an amazing team of 4-5 motion graphics designers at Junction Box Design throughout the series.
I worked closely with the writers, producers and directors to adapt and modernize aspects of the original Star Trek design language, conceptualize and design key plot information and animate it for on-set interactive playback and post-production VFX.
It was an honour to establish screens throughout the Enterprise, and lead the building on-set apps for a plethora of handheld screens (PADDs, Tricorders, all sorts of alien devices).
Showrunners: Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers
Client: Paramount+
PADDs
PADDs play an integral part in the storytelling throughout the series, from reading mission briefs, adjusting ship settings, and away mission problem solving. The varied use of PADDs provided a fun canvas to display data-driven storytelling while implementing a beautiful, functional and interactive UI for the actors.
Enterprise Science Lab
Starting in Season 3, the Science Lab became a location for the crew to analyze and problem solve and work on experimental or observational sciences. Equipped with a multitude of large screens around the lab, the motion graphics provide story-driven canvases for the characters to walk up to and interact with. I helped design and establish some of the screens throughout the lab as well as hero graphics seen throughout Season 3.
Enterprise Bridge
The bridge is the command center of the Enterprise, where the commanding officers supervise all the ship's operations. Throughout the series, I've gotten to design some cool hero graphics that play on the Bridge like the Systems Analysis and the Gorn Demarcation Map.
Enterprise Sickbay
The Sickbay acts as the medical center aboard the Enterprise. I helped design, animate and establish all of the tablets and interactive devices in the Enterprise Sickbay as well as some hero screens throughout the series, displayed below.
Holograms
Holograms don't appear often in Strange New Worlds (Captain Pike canonically dislikes them!), but occasionally, people from the future or alien races use them. I was lucky enough to design and animate the holograms for the Department of Temporal Investigations, based on the UI of previous Star Trek series. I also designed an ornate hologram for an assistant on the planet Majalis.
Other Devices
Tricorders, miscellaneous consoles aboard the Enterprise and other alien tech appear throughout the series.
The Serene Squall Pirate Ship
In Season 1, Episode 7, Pike and the gang take control of a space pirate ship, The Serene Squall. I got to design the UI for the bridge of the pirate space ship, the jail cell lockscreen, as well as the Pirate Captain Angel's getaway shuttle screens. Who doesn't love a good space pirate ship?
HUDs and Overlays
Throughout the series, I got to design and animate HUDs and overlays for an assortment of devices like binoculars, drones and alien visors.
